ABOUT

Please read this guide on a laptop, since it'll be much easier to understand. The mobile layout is not as user friendly.

Page One is a collaborative writing device. The goal is to collectively work together to publish pages which will subsequently be made into another artwork (most likely a book). Page One has 70 positions to purchase split between WRITERS, EDITORS, TITLE and VETO. Two other positions PAGE and STATUS are controlled by the Creator and are not for sale.

Published pages will appear in "Log" here for viewing.

OVERVIEW

WRITERS

WRITERS are located in the middle of the board. They choose letters of the alphabet to fill the page. There are 49 WRITERS. The available symbols are A-Z or ? or ∞.

STATUS

STATUS is located in the bottom left of the board and is controlled by the Creator. It shows information about the state of Page One. Players can use STATUS to identify what to do next. There are 3 options:

"PLAY"

Page One is currently in play. All WRITERS, EDITORS, TITLE and VETO owners can change their respective layers. A page can only be published if STATUS shows "PLAY".

"P/RESET"

Stands for "Published/Reset". This means the last page has been published and the next page is getting ready to be written. Players will need to change "P/RESET" back to "PLAY" in order to publish the next page.

"END"

Page One has ended. A new artwork using all the pages of Page One will be created and named after TITLE.

P2.gif

EDITORS

EDITORS are located on the right side of the board. They choose a √ symbol to confirm when a line is allowed to be published. There are 7 EDITORS, one for each line (1-7). The available symbols are ? or √ or ∞.

VETO

VETO are located all over the board at WRITERS (lines 1-7), EDITORS and TITLE. They use a golden _ symbol to disregard other players positions in order to keep Page One continuing. There are 9 VETO owners. The available symbols are _ or "empty" which hides the _ symbol.

TITLE

TITLE is located at the bottom of the board. TITLE owners work together to decide on the name of the artwork created after Page One has ended. There are 5 TITLE owners. The available symbols are A-Z or ? or ∞.

PAGE

PAGE is located in the bottom right of the board and is controlled by the Creator. The PAGE number will increase after each page is published.

PUBLISHING A PAGE

A page will only be published if the following conditions are met:

1) STATUS shows "PLAY".

2) There are no ? symbols on Page One (after applying VETO).

3) 4 or more EDITORS have chosen the √ symbol.

4) The PAGE number has not been published before.

Once all these conditions are met, the Creator will do the following:

1) The PAGE number will increase by 1.

2) STATUS will change from "PLAY" to "P/RESET".

 The page will be published in "Log" here for viewing.

Publish1.png

This page will be published.

VETOPublish.png

This page will be published.

(Note the ? symbols showing have all been vetoed. Therefore condition 2 has not been broken. VETO will be explained later in more detail)

Publish2.png

This page will be published. (Note at least 4 or more EDITORS have chosen √ symbol).

Publish3.png

This page will NOT be published. TITLE shows ? symbol (breaks condition 2).

Publish4.png

This page will NOT be published. STATUS does not show PLAY (breaks condition 1).

Publish3-2.png

This page will NOT be published. WRITER(1A) and EDITOR(3) still have ? symbol (breaks condition 2).

Publish3.png

This page will NOT be published. Not enough EDITORS have √ symbol (breaks condition 3).

LOG

[001] [BOTLS] TESTING PAGE ONE EXAMPLE SO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW YOU PUBLISH {}

[002] [HELLO] THIS∞IS PAGE TWO EXAMPLE SO EVERYONE CAN∞KNOW HOW TO PLAY {}

[003] [H∞LLO] I HOPE∞YOU ARE∞STARTING TO UNDERSTAND HOW∞THIS WORKS∞∞∞ {PONDSSOL√}

Note: "Log" order is as follows: [PAGE] / [TITLE] / WRITERS / {VETO}

When words/sentences are easy to identify and coherent, the Creator will put spaces between those words only when publishing them in "Log". This makes sentences easier to read for everyone and discourages players trying to write random words in the middle of sentences. For example:

[001] [ABCDE] HELLO FGAJSF TO NEW FOLLOW DERRTUPT NOT MAKING SENSE AT ALL {I LOVE DOG∞}

The symbols in purple "FGAJSF" and "DERRTUPT" do not have easily identifiable words. While there are real words such as "UP" within "DERRTUPT", these do not warrant a space by the Creator.

Players are encouraged to work together and try to create full words and sentences!

"Log" is a running record of the all the pages currently published by Page One. "Log" will be used to create the next artwork after Page One has ended. If the example images above (left to right) were written by Page One, they would be published in "Log" here as follows:

VETO1.png

[002] [VETO_] THI_∞IS HOW YOU∞USE VETO TO MAKE SURE PAGES∞GET PUBLISHED {_HTKUPB_√}

When VETO is involved in a publish, any vetoed ? symbols will be replaced with an _ symbol in "Log". Other symbols will stay the same. The vetoed symbols are added together (lines 1-7 + TITLE + EDITORS) and put at the end of "Log" in brackets { }. For example the following page would be published in "Log" as follows.

CHANGING STATUS FROM "P/RESET" TO "PLAY"

After publishing a page, the Creator will do the following:

1) The PAGE number will increase by 1.

2) STATUS will change from "PLAY" to "P/RESET".

In order for the next page to be published, players NEED to change the STATUS from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY". This will only occur if the following conditions are met:

1) All WRITERS, EDITORS and TITLE owners must show the ? symbol or ∞ symbol (after applying VETO)

Once these conditions are met, the following will occur:

1) The Creator will change STATUS from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY" indicating the next page can be written and eventually published.

RESET1.png

PAGE 001 was just published. STATUS changes to "P/RESET" and PAGE changes to 002.

RESET2.png

After all WRITERS, EDITORS and TITLE show the  ? symbol or ∞ symbol, STATUS changes back to "PLAY".

PAGE 002 can now be written and eventually published.

RESET(VETO).png

Even though WRITER(3C) and WRITER(5E) are not showing the ? or ∞ symbol, they have been vetoed. Therefore STATUS will still change back to "PLAY" in this scenario. VETO will be explained in more detail later.

ENDING PAGE ONE

Page One will end if the following conditions are met:

Ending Early

1) All WRITERS and EDITORS change to the ∞ symbol.

2) There are no ? symbols on Page One (cannot use VETO).

3) 20 or more pages have been published.

OR

Ending Late

1) PAGE 999 has been published.

When Ending Early or Ending Late conditions are met, the Creator will do the following:

1) STATUS will change to "END".

2) The last TITLE shown when Page One ends, will be the name of the new artwork created.

VETO

At times, players might forget to interact with Page One or purposily make it difficult to publish pages against the majority. For situations like this, VETO owners can use the golden _ symbol to disregard other WRITERS, EDITORS or TITLE owners positions. There are a total of 9 VETO owners, located in WRITERS (lines 1-7), one in EDITORS and one in TITLE. A vetoed players position acts as if it does not exist, helping the majority to keep Page One publishing. There are two situations where VETO can be used.

On The Publish (STATUS shows "PLAY")

In this situation the aim is to publish a page, therefore the following rules apply:

1) VETO can only be used on ? symbols.

VETO1.png

Under normal circumstances, this page would not be    published since WRITER(1D) and TITLE(5) are still showing the ? symbol breaking condition 2

However, since both WRITER(1D) and TITLE(5) are being vetoed (gold _ symbol underneath), their positions don't exist, meaning condition 2 has not been broken. Therefore this page can still be published.

For all the other VETO positions, these positions do not have a ? symbol, therefore they CANNOT be vetoed.

RECAP - PUBLISHING A PAGE

A page will only be published if the following conditions are met:

1) STATUS shows "PLAY".

2) There are no ? symbols on Page One (after applying VETO).

3) 4 or more EDITORS have chosen the √ symbol.

4) The PAGE number has not been published before.

Once all these conditions are met, the Creator will do the following:

1) The PAGE number will increase by 1.

2) STATUS will change from "PLAY" to "P/RESET".

On The Reset (STATUS shows "P/RESET")

In this situation the aim is to change STATUS from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY", therefore the following rules apply:

1) VETO can be used on all symbols except the ? symbol or ∞ symbol.

VETO2.png

RECAP - CHANGING STATUS FROM "P/RESET" TO "PLAY"

In order for the next page to be published, players NEED to change the STATUS from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY". This will only occur if the following conditions are met:

1) All WRITERS, EDITORS and TITLE owners must show the ? symbol or ∞ symbol (after applying VETO)

Once these conditions are met, the following will occur:

1) The Creator will change STATUS from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY" indicating the next page can be written and eventually published.

Once again, under normal circumstances, the STATUS would not change from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY" since WRITER(1D), WRITER(2A), WRITER(4E) and EDITOR(2) all show a symbol other than the ? or ∞ symbol breaking condition 1.

However, since WRITER(1D), WRITER(2A), WRITER(4E) and EDITOR(2) are being vetoed, their positions don't exist, meaning condition 1 has not been broken. Therefore STATUS will still change from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY".

For all the other VETO positions, these positions are showing the ? symbol or ∞ symbol, therefore they CANNOT be vetoed.

THE GIFT

The Gift is the artwork created from the "Log" here of Page One. It is essentially a lottery and a way for the Creator to give back to the players.

When Page One has ended the Creator will do the following:

1) Use the "Log" written by Page One to create a new artwork.

2) Name the new artwork after the last TITLE shown when Page One ended.

3) Randomly gift this artwork to one of the player's wallet addresses.

Anyone who has owned a layer during Page One is eligible to win. However, your chance of winning will depend on how much work you put into Page One. Here is how points are calculated:

Publishing A Page

When a page is published, all layer owners will receive 1 point. The exemptions are:

1) Any player that is successfully vetoed will not receive 1 point.

2) VETO owners who successfully veto a player will receive 2 points.

Changing STATUS from "P/RESET" to "PLAY"

When STATUS changes from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY", all layer owners will receive 1 point. The exemptions are:

1) Any player that is successfully vetoed will not receive 1 point.

2) VETO owners who successfully veto a player will receive 2 points.

3) Players who show a ∞ symbol will not receive 1 point.

Since each layer change costs GAS, the Creator believes this is fairest approach to the lottery. The reasons why are as follows:

- Players that are willing to change their layers receive more points than players who don't.

- Players that eventually sell their layers, still have a chance to win.

- This approach stops players farming points between themselves, since the tally of points is based off wallet addresses, not player names.

The Creator will keep track of all the points and the tally will be visible on this website soon.

The Gift is subject to change. However any changes will try to make it more fair for the players.

TIMING

Timing

Since STATUS and PAGE are controlled by the Creator, there might be a delay between when a page is finished by the players, and the Creator updating STATUS and PAGE to reflect this.

Therefore the Creator will check Page One approximately once per day (around 1400 UTC) to publish pages as soon as possible.

TIPS

Since Page One can be written in many ways, it's really up to the players to decide what they publish. However, if you need some help deciding what to write, you can follow the tips below:

WRITERS

Since published pages are recorded in "Log" from rows 1 to 7 in order, its suggested WRITERS wait for the player on their left to choose a letter first, before they do. This will make it easier to write complete words or sentences throughout the game.

EDITORS

EDITORS choose a √ symbol to confirm when a line is ready to be published. It's recommended EDITORS wait for WRITERS of their line to choose a letter first before they choose √ symbol. While EDITORS are limited to 3 symbols, cannot add alphabetic letters to Page One, and will most likely be swapping between ? and √ for most of the game, they are a much needed position to avoid offensive or inappropriate material from being published. Thank you EDITORS.

TITLE

"Log" is published in the following order [PAGE] / [TITLE] / WRITERS / {VETO}. Since TITLE is always first, TITLE players can potentially add words onto the beginning of published pages or write their own story vertically. For example highlighted in blue:

[001] [HELLO] THIS IS AN EXAMPLE∞MESSAGE∞PLEASE LOOK TO∞THE LEFT∞NOW {BEGINNIN_}

[002] [∞WOW∞] THIS IS AN EXAMPLE∞MESSAGE∞PLEASE LOOK TO∞THE LEFT∞NOW {OF THE DOG√}

[003] [FIRST] THIS IS AN EXAMPLE∞MESSAGE∞PLEASE LOOK TO∞THE LEFT∞NOW {VETO DONE∞}

Also, the last TITLE shown when Page One ends will be the name of the new artwork created. Since Ending Early is decided by WRITERS and EDITORS only, TITLE owners need to be careful of Ending Early, since it might not give them enough time to purposely choose a title for the new artwork before Page One ends (see Ending Early condition 2).

VETO

Since VETO owners are the only way to remove unwanted symbols, it's recommended they wait until everyone has made a choice before seeking out symbols to veto. This strategy will help pages get published or help STATUS change from "P/RESET" back to "PLAY".

"Log" is published in the following order [PAGE] / [TITLE] / WRITERS / {VETO}. Since all VETO positions (lines 1-7 + TITLE + EDITORS) are added together and put at the end of "Log" in brackets { }, VETO players can potentially write their own story vertically or add words onto the end of publish pages. For example in yellow:

[001] [HELLO] THIS IS AN EXAMPLE∞MESSAGE∞PLEASE LOOK TO∞THE RIGHT NOW {BEGINNIN_}

[002] [∞WOW∞] THIS IS AN EXAMPLE∞MESSAGE∞PLEASE LOOK TO∞THE RIGHT NOW {OF THE DOG√}

[003] [FIRST] THIS IS AN EXAMPLE∞MESSAGE∞PLEASE LOOK TO∞THE RIGHT NOW {VETO DONE∞}

In order for VETO players to write something coherent, its recommended VETO players to wait for the VETO player above you to decide on a letter first before you do. IE: VETO(9) on TITLE waits for VETO(7) on line 7. VETO(7) on line 7 waits for VETO(6) on line 6 etc.

Poor VETO(8) is stuck on EDITORS and therefore only has ? or √ or ∞ symbols to choose from....

GAS COST

The cost of running Page One for the Creator and players is relatively high. If 999 pages were to be published, it would cost the Creator 9-15 ETH to run, and it would cost each player approximately 6-9 ETH to participate. This cost assumes a transaction fee of 0.003-0.005 ETH per state change, and also assumes 3 state changes for the Creator and 2 state changes for the players, per page.

While 999 pages is the absolute maximum, if a more reasonable 20 pages were to be published, it would cost the Creator 0.18-0.3 ETH to run and 0.12-0.2 ETH for each player.

So, why design Page One like this? There are probably multiple ways one could design Page One, each with their own pro and cons. While this design uses more state changes and has higher cost than other designs, the pages that get published are much more coherent and meaningful.
